Medicine made from plants has been used throughout human history. Today, over 100 pharmaceutical drugs and medicines trace their “roots” to chemical compounds found in plants. For example, Taxol, a powerful chemotherapeutic medication for breast cancer, is extracted from the Pacific Yew plant. The drug Digoxin used for irregular heartbeats is removed from the Foxglove plant.
